When
Your Dreams Have to Change
Life isn't always as predictable as we'd like it to be. Whether
things happen that are out of our control or changes happen because we need them
to happen, life isn't always something that we can plan. This is often the case
when it comes to dreams and making them come true. When you have certain goals
in mind, you may do everything in your power to ensure they come true, but
sometimes things happen to slow you down or stop you altogether. What do you do
then?
Recognize that it's Not the End
One of the easiest ways to become defeated when life changes unexpectedly is to
admit defeat. When you simply give up on your dreams, you aren't just giving up
on the present dream, you can telling yourself that it's okay to give up
whenever things get too hard - this will affect all of your plans, not just the
ones you need to put on hold right now. You need to create a mindset that is
focused on getting what you need to get done now so that you can eventually go
back to your stalled plans. Change the idea of 'never' in your head to 'later'
and you will become more hopeful as well as more likely to succeed eventually.
Readjust your Goals
Sometimes the needs of others need to come before your own, often when a loved
one becomes ill and needs your help. If this is the case, you might want to look
at your dreams from another angle. By figuring out other ways to accomplish
certain goals, you might actually find that you can still succeed, and even have
an easier time as you do. For example, if you can't go back to school because
you need to care for someone, you might want to look into online classes that
you can take on when you're away from your duties. This can actually prove a
healthy way to deal with any stress you are feeling without taking away from
your longer term goals and dreams.
Make a Date with Your Dreams
You can also dabble in your dreams when life gets in the way - still putting
some energy into the goals you want to achieve. Try to make a date with yourself
each week for an hour. During this hour, you will focus on nothing else but your
dream, even if to simply close your eyes and think about it. This will help to
boost your energy towards that goal, your motivation to do more, and your
momentum. And once you begin 'dating' your dreams, you may find you can spend
even more time with them.
Your dreams don't have to be fulfilled in a certain way in order to be valid or
'right.' What you do need to do is make the time to do something that relates to
your dreams. Even if you have to start taking baby steps instead of larger
leaps, you are still walking the road to your desired life.
